THRUMSTER is an old family run estate of about 10,000 acres, about 6,000 of which is moorland, and the rest arable crofting ground. The moors are flat, rolling expanses of flow ground, renowned for the diversity of its wildlife, and some of the best ground in the country for falconry and walked up shooting with pointers or setters. There can be few more lovely sights than a team of these beautiful dogs working the heather on a warm August afternoon.

Huge bags are not our aim, but high quality sport, with all the charm and atmosphere that a typical day out on Thrumster has always been.

At the conclusion of a day, a dram is served in the hall of Thrumster House, with a chance to mull over the events of the day.

A beautiful, restored Caithness crofthouse on the banks of Loch Yarrows is available for let, with a boat, and fishing on all five lochs. Angie’s cottage, within the policies of Thrumster House is also available with fishing, or with roe stalking.

Lunch arrives on the hill

In August on the moor, the kilt is "de rigueur" for keeper and dog handler, and a hardy Highland pony brings the picnic to the hill on a fine day.  When the weather is less kind, Norma at the Old Smiddy Inn will serve her wonderful soups and sweet dishes.

Thrumster, in common with many parts of Caithness, is first landfall for migrating snipe and woodcock, snipe usually arriving in prodigious numbers on the October full moon.
